Hi there! I’m Paula, your friendly, crazy animal-loving mum. Yes, you heard that right – crazy and loving. It’s a delicate balance, really.
I consider myself lucky to have a kind, caring husband, two beautiful children, and a whole bunch of furry creatures who make life even more chaotic, in the best possible way. Don’t worry, I’ll introduce you to my adorable furbabies shortly.
I still live not too far from where I grew up in Hertfordshire. You know what they say, you can take the girl out of Hertfordshire, but you can’t take the Hertfordshire out of the girl!
Growing up, our family had a pretty small pet selection: mostly hamsters, rabbits, and fish. But when my sister and I reached secondary school, everything changed. We were finally allowed to adopt a cat from the local rescue centre.
I can still remember the sheer excitement. Who needs sleep when there’s a potential feline friend waiting for you? We rushed to the rescue centre like kids on Christmas morning, and I was instantly smitten. There were four beautiful cats, and I wanted them all. My dad, ever the voice of reason, reminded me that a cat army probably wasn’t practical, so we adopted two: Honey the tortoiseshell and Sandy the tabby.
That moment changed everything. From then on, cats became an essential part of my world. My love for animals grew into something deeper, not just affection, but a source of strength.
As someone who struggles with depression and anxiety, my pets have been my lifeline. They’ve sat with me during panic attacks, comforted me when I’ve felt completely lost, and reminded me that I’m never truly alone. Their love is constant, calming, and unconditional. They’ve done more for my mental health than I could ever fully explain, but I try to, here.
Now, I’m proudly owned by a diverse, slightly bonkers group of animals:
🐾 Poppy – our stroppy but graceful Ragdoll (8), who brings elegance and attitude in equal measure.
🐾 Miki – an 8-year-old Japanese Bobtail who keeps us on our toes with her mischievous streak.
🐾 Teddy & Mittens – our 6-year-old tabby rescue twins. Teddy’s our shy guy who only appears at mealtimes, while Mittens is a full-time lap-lover.
🐾 Thomas – a 5-year-old moggy full of cuddles and curiosity.
🐾 Tiny & Kiki – the “babies,” born 31st August 2023 behind my uncle’s sofa when he kindly took in a stray. They bring chaos and cuteness in equal measure.
🐾 Casper – our 4-year-old Pomchi (Pomeranian–Chihuahua mix) who thinks he’s a Rottweiler. Small in size, huge in personality.
🐟 And last but not least, our peaceful fish, who brings a bit of calm to the madness.Together, we’re one big (and often noisy) family. Life with them isn’t always easy, especially with anxiety and depression in the mix but it’s full of love, laughter, and lessons I’d never want to be without.
Through Pet Mum, I share our real-life moments – the cuddles, the chaos, the healing, and the joy. If you’ve ever felt like your pets get you better than most people do, or if you find comfort in a paw on your leg or a purr in the quiet, then you’re in the right place.
