What is a Japanese Bobtail?

One common question that owners of Japanese Bobtails often receive is “What happened to your cat’s tail?” I still have a lot of people ask me this question about our bobtail Miki. However, the truth is nothing has happened to it, the bobbed tail is a natural genetic trait of this breed.

The image of the raised paw cat statue, known as maneki-neko in Japan, which translates to “beckoning cat”, is actually based on the likeness of a Japanese Bobtail. These statues are believed to bring good luck and prosperity to their owners.

One of the most notable physical features of the Japanese Bobtail is its tail. Resembling that of a rabbit, it is short and pom-pom-like in appearance. In fact, the name “bobtail” refers to this characteristic. Despite their short tails, these cats are not hindered in any way and can move with grace and agility. Additionally, their back legs are slightly longer than their front legs, giving them a muscular appearance despite their small to medium size.
